Indian student freed from Chechen rebelsAn Indian student who was taken hostage by Chechen rebels has been freed after eight months in captivity. Satyanarayan Raghunath Mishra, studying in Dagestan, was kidnapped by terrorists for a ransom of $1 million, Voice of Russia said yesterday. When Mishra told them his parents living in Bihar could not afford to pay such a huge sum, he was told to write to the Indian mission in Moscow. During the current military operations in Chechnya, Russian troops stormed a rebel hideout, overpowered the terrorists and rescued Mishra. Voice of Russia did not elaborate. This was the first case of an Indian being taken hostage by Chechen rebels. UNI |
