Indian student freed from Chechen rebels

E-Mail this report to a friend

An Indian student who was taken hostage by Chechen rebels has been freed after eight months in captivity.

Satyanarayan Raghunath Mishra, studying in Dagestan, was kidnapped by terrorists for a ransom of $1 million, Voice of Russia said yesterday.

When Mishra told them his parents living in Bihar could not afford to pay such a huge sum, he was told to write to the Indian mission in Moscow.

During the current military operations in Chechnya, Russian troops stormed a rebel hideout, overpowered the terrorists and rescued Mishra.

Voice of Russia did not elaborate.

This was the first case of an Indian being taken hostage by Chechen rebels.
