The UN Neutral Nations Repatriation Commission operated from November 1950 to 1953. The Indian units involved were 2 Para (Maratha), 6 Jat, 5 Rajputana Rifles (Napier's), 3 Dogra, 3 Garhwal Rifles, 26 General Hospital and 60 Para Field Ambulance.
The UN International Commission operated in Indo-China (Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia) for 16 years from 1954 to 1970. The Indian deployment started with 2 Guards. The force commanders were Major General K P Dhargalkar for North Vietnam, Major General P S Gyani for Laos and Major General Sardanand Singh for Cambodia.
3 Para went in as part of the UN Emergency Force I in November 1956. The UNEF stayed on till June 1967. India sent replacements every year: 1 Para, 2 Grenadiers, 4 Kumaon, 4 Rajput, 2 Sikh, 2 Maratha Light Infantry, 9 Dogra, 4 Guards, 3 Punjab and 1 Sikh Light Infantry. In January 1960, Major General P S Gyani took over the UNEF command. He was later succeeded by Brigadier I J Rikhye. In the six-day Arab-Israeli war of 1967, Indian troops were caught in the crossfire. 39 personnel were killed. The rest disengaged and returned via Cyprus.
The UN operation in Congo was between July 1960 and June 1964. The Indian forces involved were 152 General Hospital and 99 Infantry Brigade comprising 1 Dogra, 2 Jat, 3/1 Gurkha Rifles, a squadron of 63 Cavalry, 120 Heavy Mortar Battery, 13 Field Company, a machine-gun company from 4 Mahar and 95 Field Ambulance. They were replaced by 4 Madras, 4 Rajputana Rifles, 2/5 Gurkha Rifles, 121 Heavy Mortar Battery and 22 Field Company. Six Canberra aircraft from 5 Squadron of the Indian Air Force also took part. Major General Dewan Prem Chand commanded the force.
The UN Transition Assistance Group operated between May 1989 and May 91. Lieutenant General Dewan Prem Chand, PVSM, commanded the force.
