Armed forces tribunal awaiting cabinet nod

E-Mail this report to a friend

The armed forces tribunal, a long-standing demand of the three services, is close to becoming a reality. It is awaiting approval of the cabinet committee, official sources said on Wednesday.

After approval, a bill will be introduced in parliament. The defence ministry and service headquarters have cleared the establishment of the tribunal.

Efforts to establish a tribunal as an independent statutory body for service personnel for speedier clearance of cases, gathered momentum after the 1982 Supreme Court judgement in Lt Col Prithi Pal Singh Bedi's case.

However, it failed to take concrete shape although the estimates committee of parliament, in its 19th report, said urgent action should be taken by the government to constitute such a body.

The matter was reconsidered on the committee's persistence. Simultaneously, service headquarters and the defence ministry pursued the matter at the highest level.
