Kamla Bora in Jaipur

A local court in Jaipur has sentenced a Pakistani spy to eight years rigorous imprisonment.

District and Sessions Judge K L Chandok held Munir Khan guilty of violating the Official Secrets Act.

According to the prosecution, Khan, a resident of Bahawalpur in Pakistan, was arrested in 1993 in Sriganganagar and several incriminating documents were seized from him.

The documents included maps of defence locations along the Indo-Pak border and the Ganga Canal in western Rajasthan.

The accused was first arrested in 1992 in the Sriganganagar area, but was released soon after. The police caught him again in 1993 and indicted him.

While convicting Khan, the court ordered that his sentence be set off against the time he has already spent in prison, under section 428 of the Criminal Procedure Code. Khan has been in judicial custody for the last seven years.
