Kamla Bora in Jaipur

The station house officer of the Clock Tower police station in Ajmer, arrested on a charge of murder after the death of a National Students' Union of India leader in custody last week, was refused bail by a local court.

Judicial Magistrate Naresh Chugh rejected Har Sahaya Meena's bail application without going into the merits of the case since the accused was facing serious charges.

Meena was first suspended along with six other police officers in connection with the death of Dharmendra Raghuvanshi, president of the Ajmer Government College Students' Union. Meena was arrested only after violent student protests.

Meanwhile, Head Constable Prem Prakash Dube was also arrested on Monday night in the case. Other police personnel are being interrogated.

Although the crime branch of the Criminal Investigation Department is continuing investigations, the state government has already announced its decision to request the Union government to hand the case over to the Central Bureau of Investigation.

Raghuvanshi (25) was taken into custody on the night of June 19. He died a few hours later.
