Five die in Assam floods

E-Mail this report to a friend

At least five persons were killed in Assam floods with the situation continued to remain grim as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries still flowing above danger level, official sources said here.

Two persons in Dhemaji and Jorhat districts drowned in the Brahmaputra while three others died in landslides in Kamrup district during the past few days, they said.

The floods affected more than 4.5 lakh people in 12 districts and 48,965 hectares of crop area.

Road and rail communication remained disrupted with water level in Brahmaputra and its tributaries flowing high above the danger mark in the worst-hit Dhemaji district.

Nearly 70,000 people have been affected in 175 villages in the district.

The level in Brahmaputra in Johrat district's Majuli receded slightly though it was still flowing above the red mark and erosion was continuing unabated at Pouma and Koupati. Road communication between Kamlabari to Bongaon remained disrupted.

The state government has opened 39 relief camps for the affected people.

The affected districts are: Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Tinsukia, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Kokrajhar, Bongaigaon, Darrang, Karimganj, Dhubri, Kamrup and Goalpara.
