E-Mail this report to a friend

Syed Firdaus Ashraf in Bombay

The morning rush-hour traffic on the Western Express Highway in Bombay came to a standstill today after a boy was knocked down by a speeding Maruti car near the Cardinal Gracious School, Kherwadi, Bandra (east).

An angry mob obstructed traffic and pelted stones soon after the accident. A strong police contingent was rushed to the spot and traffic was diverted.

Sources said this was the 16th accident on this stretch of the highway in the past few months. The residents here have been, for quite sometime now, demanding the construction of a foot-over-bridge on the spot.

The boy, Sajid Shaikh (10), has been admitted to C N Desai hospital near Vakola police station. Doctors said his condition is critical.

A long stretch of the express highway has been cordoned off and both south and north bound traffic is being diverted to S V Road.

Maharashtra Minister of State for Home (urban) Kripashankar Singh paid a visit to the accident spot.
