South Asia is not Indian subcontinent: Pak

E-Mail this report to a friend

Pakistan has raised objections to the description of South Asia as the Indian subcontinent.

Commenting on Home Minister L K Advani's recent statement in France where he referred to South Asia as the 'Indian subcontinent', Pakistan's foreign office spokesperson yesterday said: ''As India is only one of the countries of South Asia, the term 'Indian subcontinent' is entirely inappropriate as a description for the whole region.''

''Its use betrays India's long-cherished dream of exercising hegemony in the region, a dream that India has failed to realise and it will never succeed in achieving,'' he added.

Advani's another recent statement proposing a confederation in the subcontinent was ''also reflective of the same unfortunate mindset,'' he opined.

''The government of Pakistan therefore hopes that use of the term 'Indian subcontinent'' to refer to South Asia will be avoided,'' he said.
