Set up a self-restraint nuclear regime, Musharraf tells India

E-Mail this report to a friend

Pakistan's Chief Executive General Pervez Musharraf has reaffirmed his country's determination to maintain minimum credible deterrence to meet any aggression, but at the same time invited India to work towards creating a strategic self-restraint regime in the nuclear field.

''We fully support creation of a strategic self-restraint regime in the sub-continent and expect a positive response from the neighbour in this regard,'' the general told the 25th international Nathiagali summer college in Islamabad on Monday.

General Musharraf said apart from achieving minimum deterrence, the thrust of Pakistan's nuclear programme was based on peaceful applications -- power generation is one of the principal tasks undertaken by the Pakistan atomic energy commission, he said.
