Hindu marriage registration left to states' discretionThe centre has left the question of compulsory registration of Hindu marriages to the respective state governments, an official release said on Tuesday. The governments of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka have made it compulsory to register all marriages. At present, registration of marriages solemnised or contracted under the Indian Christian Marriage Act, 1872, the Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act 1936 and the Special Marriage Act, 1954 is compulsory. In case a marriage does not adhere to the Special Marriage Act, 1954, it can still be registered (under Section 16 of the Act), provided it fulfils certain conditions laid down under Chapter III of the Act.
