Nine passengers gunned down in ManipurNine persons were killed and two were seriously injured when gunmen attacked a private vehicle in Manipur last evening, official sources said today. The men attacked the vehicle at Leingangpokpi, about 200 km west of Imphal, and opened fire at the passengers from both sides of the hilly road at around 1700 hours IST, the sources said. Of the nine killed, seven, including two women and the driver died on the spot. The sources said while one passenger succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital at the Jiribam border town, another died at the hospital. The injured have been taken to the hospital at Jiribam, the sources said. The vehicle left Imphal in the morning, with about 10 passengers for the border town of Jiribam, about 220 km west of Imphal, the sources added. No individual or group has claimed responsibility for the killing, the sources said, adding that some underground factions were active in the area. Police have started probing whether the incident was a fallout of renewed ethnic violence or the work of some criminal gangs who often looted passengers on highways. PTI
