Rasik Solanki's condition critical

E-Mail this report to a friend

Faisal Shariff in Bombay

The condition of Rasik Solanki (50), who set fire to Vidya Prabhudesai (41), a typist with the Reserve Bank of India, is critical. Solanki set ablaze Vidya at Maratha Mandir in Bombay, in full public view, after she turned down his marriage proposal.

Solanki has been charged under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code.

Early Saturday morning, a doctor at Nair hospital, where he has been admitted, said, "Solanki is an alcoholic. He is having respiratory problems. Chances of his survival are very slim."

Solanki had reportedly tried to commit suicide by consuming poison after his act.

A policeman posted near Solanki at the hospital said no one from his family had come to see him.

Vidya was waiting for a bus to her office. She lived alone at the RBI quarters at Bombay Central.
