NCW demands action against cops for showing rape victims

E-Mail this report to a friend

The National Commission for Women has asked Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma to take immediate action against the officers responsible for violating the law by parading two rape victims before the media at a press conference in the capital yesterday.

"We are shocked that this kind of act has been allowed. We have sent a letter to the commissioner demanding that immediate action be taken against those responsible," NCW member-secretary Binoo Sen said.

Asked about the police's explanation that the women had "come forward on their own", Sen said, "When the law provides that the rape victim should not be shown and should be in-camera, why does one need to do it? It is very insensitive."

She also contradicted reports that since the girls were foreigners from an "open society", they did not mind. "A rape victim is a rape victim. It doesn't make a difference whether she is an Indian or not."

The Delhi police yesterday paraded before reporters the two Japanese tourists, who were duped and raped by an Agra-based gang of tourist guides.
