V B Gupta will challenge suspension in court

Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Suspended Additional Commissioner of Income Tax, Vishwa Bandhu Gupta, today said he will be moving the court against his suspension in a week's time.

The finance ministry had ordered his suspension with immediate effect, yesterday. Apparently, the suspension order came after he wrote a complaint to Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha on the misuse of Voluntary Disclosure of Income Scheme, stating that the actual value of assets declared under VDIS maybe five times more than the estimated Rs 300 billion.

Gupta told rediff.com that he had written a letter to the finance minister on June 16 pointing out that there was a large amount of criminal money being declared under the VDIS.

In the letter he had also alleged that fake notes of Rs 500 denomination were being deposited to pay up the taxes.

"I plan to expose the finance ministry in the Delhi high court," Gupta said.

He also clarified that he would be making his disclosures in camera.

Criticising Chief Vigilance Commissioner N Vittal, he said, "I had also written to Vittal in March pointing out that criminal money was involved in VDIS. But he never replied."
