E-Mail this report to a friend

A 150-plot Kargil War Heroes colony would soon come up in the high-altitude town of Leh in Ladakh region. The proposed colony is to come up at Angling Thung near the local airport

The war heroes comprise mostly residents of Ladakh district. A few of them belong to the neighbouring Kargil district.

In the first phase, the district administration has allotted land to the families of 32 soldiers who took part in Operation Vijay. The documents were formally handed over to the recipients at a meeting in Leh chaired by Deputy Commissioner Navin Kumar Chaudhary on Tuesday evening.

Three among the 32 soldiers died during the war and five are winners of gallantry awards, including Mahavir Chakra and Vir Chakra.

Each plot, allotted by the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, would measure 5445 square feet. "The government has valued each plot at approximately Rs 115,000. The fencing is being carried out by the district defence co-ordination committee," Additional Deputy Commissioner T Angchuk said.
