E-Mail this report to a friend

The Central Bureau of Investigation designated court on Wednesday remanded former Bihar chief minister Dr Jagannath Mishra to 14 days' judicial custody in connection with the multi-crore fodder scam case. Rejecting his regular bail petition, CBI special judge S K Lal sent Dr Mishra to the Beur central jail.

On the request of his counsel, the judge also directed that Dr Mishra undergo a full medical checkup at the Indira Gandhi Cardiology Centre in Patna Medical College Hospital within two days. Dr Mishra's counsel informed the court that he had undergone an open heart surgery in Delhi recently.

The court had earlier issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against him and 51 others after taking cognisance of the chargesheet filed by the CBI on May 11 this year. Dr Mishra surrendered in the CBI court and filed a regular bail petition.

On October 8 last, the CBI had sought permission from the then governor Suraj Bhan for prosecuting Dr Mishra and other accused in a case related to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 3 crore from the Dumka treasury during 1995-96.

Meanwhile, former Bihar chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav, former minister Chandra Deo Prasad Verma, Rashtriya Janata Dal legislator R K Rana, MLA Jagdish Sharma and others appeared in the court in connection with another case related to the fodder scam. The court fixed July 10 as the next date for the hearing in their case.
