The Shiv Sena-Bharatiya Janata Party-backed independent candidate for the Maharashtra Legislative Council, Ramdeo Tyagi, lost on Monday despite cross-voting by some Nationalist Congress Party legislators.

The 288-member legislative assembly had to elect 11 elders out of a total of 14 in the fray.

Eight candidates won in the first round itself. They were Vilas Avchat, Kanhaiyalal Gidwani and Deepak Samant (Shiv Sena), Govind Adik, Syed Khatib Natikuddin and Ulhas Pawar (Congress), Shantaram Karmalkar and Kanta Nalawade (BJP) and Jayant Patil (PWP).

Another official candidate, Vinayak Mete of the NCP, won in the third round. But Dayanand Mhaske, the Republican Party of India, Athavale, candidate had to wait until the final, twelfth round, before he was declared elected.
