Gujarat drops chapter on Kapil Dev from text books

In an unusual fall-out of the betting scandal and subsequent raids on the premises of cricketers, Gujarat's Education Minister Anandiben Patel has taken the drastic step of dropping a chapter pertaining to Kapil Dev's achievements from the state's text books.

Students of English in the tenth standard have a chapter on cricket hero Kapil Dev. It lauds his bowling records, his character and his struggle to achieve greatness.

Anandiben Patel told rediff.com, "The Central Bureau of Investigation raids have changed our perspective of him. Students were asking many questions after reading the newspapers. They are now confused. What they read in papers and what they are taught about him in the textbooks are quite in contrast. Since the taxmen and CBI claim to have found incriminating documents, I took the decision to remove the chapter from the text books of Gujarat."

Patel's office, on Sunday, issued a government resolution to this effect.
