The Preeti Shrivastav murder case had rocked the state just days before the Digvijay Singh government was sworn in for a second term. The Bharatiya Janata Party had accused the state government of trying to hush up the matter

Subsequently, a house committee was formed to conduct an in-depth enquiry into the matter. The committee in its reports had questioned role of the district administration, college principal and the police in the case.
