Classical singer Dagar dead

An exponent of the Lucknow gharana [school of music], Aminuddin Dagar was also founder of the Dagar Institute of Music. He became a household name as he was a senior artiste of All India Radio and Doordarshan, and he mesmerised audiences with his golden voice.

As soon as news of his death spread, many admirers thronged his south Calcutta residence for a last glimpse of the great singer.

As a mark of tribute, his body has been kept for public viewing at the Sangeet Research Academy office, till the burial on Friday.

Ustad Aminuddin was the last link of the great four Dagar brothers who carried on the dhrupad/dhamar gayaki of the Dagar clan, said to have emerged from Baba Imam Khan Dagar, court singer of Moghul ruler Mohammed Shah Rangila.

His brothers were Moinuddin, Zahiruddin and Faizuddin.

The ustad, who used to pair up with elder brother Moinuddin in public performances, set up a Gurukul Ashram in Calcutta to train young musicians in dhrupad/dhamar in his later years.

Among his notable disciples are Pandit Vijay Kumar Kichlu, executive director of the Sangeet Research Academy, founded at the initiative of Pandit Ravi Shankar, Yehudi Menuhin and Satyajit Ray, among others.
