Gujarat's Narmada minister resigns

A Correspondent in Gandhinagar

Jainarayan Vyas, Gujarat's Minister for Narmada and Big Dams was asked to resign after he called Chief Minister Keshubhai Patel 'a liar'.

The incident occurred at the cabinet meeting in Gandhinagar on Wednesday.

Tempers flared when Patel and Vyas got into a verbal tussle after the latter severely criticised the government.

Immediately after the resignation Vyas told rediff.com, "A heated discussion broke out between me and the CM. At one point, I told him, 'You are lying!' So he asked me to resign, which I did."

Tension has been brewing between Patel and Vyas for some time now.

According to a close confidante of Patel, "CM had lost confidence in Vyas." He alleged that Vyas was leaking details of cabinet meetings.

Vyas, a former bureaucrat, had many political foes and few friends in his own party.
