Five of jeweller's family murdered in Surat

Two unknown assailants, who had come to loot a jewellery shop in Jalaram Nagar area of Surat, murdered five persons of a jeweller's family on Friday.

Bhawani Jewellers is a small jewellery shop in the middle-class locality of Pandesara housing board colony. It belonged to Prakash Bherumal Jain (46), a migrant from Rajasthan.

On Friday at around 6.30 am, when 19-year-old Alka, Jain's daughter, left home to collect milk she left the door open. The criminals took advantage and sneaked into the house.

When Alka returned, the assailants were still there, but they had brutally murdered five of her relatives. Those killed were her father, mother Sushila (43), brother Narendra (19) and sisters Dipika (11) and Kaushlaya (22). Kaushlaya was 8-months pregnant.

Alka's youngest brother Jitu (10) survived because he was in the bathroom getting ready to go to school.

Alka pleaded for mercy and requested the killers to spare Jitu and herself.

In a choked voice she told rediff.com, "I packed all the jewelry of the shop and told them to spare us." The killers escaped with the jewellery.

Alka broke down while recounting the incident.

Police has taken her away to a safer place and are inquiring about the assailants.

The area's traders have declared a bandh on hearing the news.

City Police Commissioner Kuldip Sharma to rediff.com, "I have talked to my officers and according to their preliminary observations, it looks like a case of personal vandetta. Further investigations are on."
