Minor fires break out in Delhi airport

Our Correspondent in New Delhi

Fire broke out twice at the domestic terminal of the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon, leading to major confusion and delayed flights.

Both the fires were brought under control, with no major damage, according to initial reports from the Delhi Fire Service.

The first fire broke out at about 1300 hours (IST), in the air-conditioning unit of Terminal 1B, which is used by the private airlines. It was brought under control within no time.

However, at about 1600 hours, another fire broke out. This too was brought under control quickly.

There are conflicting versions about the second incident.

While DFS official said the grass and vegetation around one of the runways had caught fire, a senior airport official said another part of the same air-conditioning system had caught fire.

Jet Airways shifted all its domestic flights to the Indian Airlines terminal at the airport. All the evening flights of Jet have been delayed by almost half an hour, due to overcrowding of the Indian Airlines terminal.

Airport officials said that the situation was under control.
