Violence erupts in Ahmedabad
for third consecutive day

The sensitive Shahpur locality in Ahmedabad was rocked by violence for the third consecutive day on Monday, forcing police to burst over a dozen tear-gas shells to scare away warring groups belonging to two different communities who were indulging in heavy stone throwing and arson in Nagoriwad area of the walled city.

Police said mobs set afire a number of cabins and kiosks in the labour-dominated Nagoriwad before making good their escape.

So far, there were no reports of injury to anyone in the violence on Monday, police added.

In the violence since Saturday night, at least five persons suffered injuries and the police had to fire altogether eleven rounds in the air and burst over 200 tear-gas shells to disperse two groups of people indulging in heavy stone throwing and arson in sensitive Shahpur area.

Four houses, a car and a scooter were set afire by the mob in the area on Sunday.

Trouble began when members of a community objected to defecating in the open by a youth, which led to heavy stone pelting between the two groups late on Saturday night, police added.
