Bihar CM seeks Centre's intervention
on Assam killings

Bihar Chief Minister Rabri Devi has expressed concern over the recent spate of killings of Bihari labourers by militants in Assam and sought the Centre's intervention to end the violence.

In a letter faxed to Union Home Minister L K Advani on Friday, the chief minister requested him to direct the Assam government to ensure safety of Bihari labourers and adequate compensation to the next of kin of those killed in militant violence, officials said on Saturday.

This systematic ethnic cleansing must stop immediately or it may lead to retributive action and consequent disturbances as people in Bihar are extremely distressed by the killings, she said.

A deep sense of anger and hurt pervades Bihar in the aftermath of the killing of 26 innocent labourers from the state in Tinsukia on December seven preceded by the slaughter of 16 Biharis in Bongaigaon, Nalbari and Karbi Anglong districts by the insurgents, she said.
