Depressed guard behind shooting incident
at Indian naval chief's home

"The security guard states that he has been under severe depression due to an on-going family feud and that he decided to commit suicide," the Indian Navy said in a statement.

"However, to guard his family interests, he claims to have fabricated the evidence of intrusion," it added.

Speculation had run high over the identity of the 'armed intruder' who was originally believed to have broken into Admiral Sushil Kumar's house just after midnight December 1.

The naval chief had dismissed the incident as a trifle saying, "Threats in a profession like mine are part of the job."

Kumar had said the intrusion could have been provoked by the navy's active role in anti-militancy operations in insurgency-hit states.

The break-in had caused a high security alert in the strategic naval headquarters in Bombay.
