Ramzan ceasefire can be extended: PM

Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee Monday said the month-long Ramzan ceasefire in Kashmir could be extended if Pakistan cooperated, but made it clear that Islamabad's response has not been "substantive."

Reacting to Pakistan's announcement that it would exercise maximum restraint along the Line of Control, Vajpayee said: "Islamabad's response has been good, but not substantive."

Asked what would be the criteria for extending the ceasefire, he said: "If the ceasefire is successful and if Pakistan cooperates, we can extend it."

The prime minister was speaking to reporters at the Navy Day reception.

Asked what steps should Pakistan take to make a success of the ceasefire, Vajpayee said: "What they have to do, they know."

Elaborating, the prime minister said Pakistan had to put an end to cross-border terrorism, violence and continue the posture of peace and friendship with India.

"We are looking for reciprocation," he said.
