Another CPI-M worker killed in Kannur

Another Communist Party of India (Marxist) worker was killed at Ayithara Mambaram in the violence-torn Kannur district of Kerala on Monday afternoon, taking the toll in a series of political killings since Sunday to four.

Police said the CPI-M worker, Bijesh, 20, was hacked to death by a group of armed men at Ayithara Mambaram. Another CPI-M worker, Sreejith, 24, was murdered in the same area early Monday morning.

Two BJP workers were also murdered in the region in the last 24 hours. While K K Biju, 25, a Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha leader was killed at Peruvangat near Malur on Monday, C K Chandran, a BJP activist, was killed Sunday night.

The violence was triggered off by a bomb attack on CPI-M district secretary, E P Jayarajan, on Dec 2.

The district-wide hartal observed by the CPI-M on Sunday in protest against the attack was marred by clashes between CPI-M and BJP workers at several places.

The situation in Koothuparamba and neighbouring areas remained very tense despite the prohibitory orders in force on Monday.
