Gujral admitted to hospital in Kathmandu

Deepak Goel in Kathmandu

Former prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral, in Nepal for the inaugural meeting of the Citizens' Commission for South Asia, took ill early on Sunday morning and was admitted to hospital.

Gujral, 81, arrived in Kathmandu on Friday in connection with the meeting of the CCSA, of which he is chairman, and kept a hectic schedule since.

Doctors at the Norvic heart and Research Centre, where he was taken in the morning after complaining of 'chest pain', said he had high blood pressure, but his condition was stable and "there is no cause for concern".

Yet, senior cardiologists from the Escorts Heart Institute and Research Centre -- to which Norvic is affiliated -- were flown in to Kathmandu from New Delhi in the evening by a special aircraft.

The consultant cardiologist at Norvic, Dr B S Rawat, said Dr Ravi R Kasliwal and other specialists would decide after examining Gujral whether to fly him back to New Delhi or keep him under observation for 36 to 48 hours in the coronary care unit of the Norvic Centre.

According to the doctors, Gujral, an asthma patient, has no history of cardiac ailment.

Initially, Gujral was scheduled to return to New Delhi on Monday afternoon after the conclusion of the three-day CCSA meet.
