Navy chief rules out altercation between guards

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Navy chief Admiral Sushil Kumar on Saturday ruled out the possibility of the firing at his residence being due to some misunderstanding between his security personnel.

"Completely ruled out," Admiral Kumar said about media speculation that the firing at his official residence between a marine commando and an 'intruder' early on Friday morning could have actually been due to some altercation/misunderstanding between his security guards.

"I don't think it was due to any misunderstanding between the guards," he said.

The Admiral added that it was a 'very mild incident as far as I am concerned'. He admitted that he has been receiving vague threats for some time now.

"I have opted for a career essentially full of risk. In our profession, we have to accept that risk. There may have been threats, but that is part of my job," he said.

He said Indian Navy has been involved in various operational theatres and assisting the army in counter-insurgency operations. The threats could be from any of these areas.

Pointing out that various agencies, including the Delhi police, Intelligence Bureau, Crime Branch and Navy, were investigating the matter, Admiral Kumar refused any further discussion on the issue.

The Navy has flown in a special team of marine commandos and other personnel from Bombay to New Delhi. They have taken over the security of Navy House, the official residence of the naval chief, since Friday.

On Monday, the Navy chief will host the President, prime minister, defence minister and other dignitaries in his house on the occasion of Navy Day.
