Ceasefire Day 5: Four of family killed

Day 5 of the unilateral cease-fire began in the troubled state of Jammu and Kashmir with the killing of four members of a family at Sajroo village in Udhampur district of Jammu region.

Police in Srinagar said late Friday evening militants hurled a hand grenade and followed it by firing on the house of Gian Singh at Sajroo, killing four persons, including three daughters of the house owner and his son.

Singh and his other son, who were seriously wounded, were shifted to hospital late on Saturday night.

A senior police officer said that the security forces in a nearby camp fired flares and the gunmen escaped. Troops rushed to the spot and mounted searches. No one has owned responsibility for the killings.

In Heerpora, in southern Pulwama district, militants shot an alleged security force informer identified as Bashir Ahmad. Police later visited the area.

Militants tried to force entry into the house of another alleged woman informer at Churan in Pulwama district. However the inmates forced the militants to flee. While fleeing, the gunmen fired several rounds in air.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir police chief A K Suri Saturday clarified that the Jammu and Kashmir police, like the army and other security agencies, had suspended combat operations against militants in the state with the beginning of the Holy month of Ramadan in line with Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's announcement.

At a press conference in Srinagar on Friday, the DGP had said that the Jammu and Kashmir police had not suspended anti-militancy operations in Kashmir. "Militants are criminals and there is no cease-fire against them."

Suri who flew to Jammu on Saturday morning, issued a statement following directions from an embarrassed state government.
