25 peacocks poisoned to death in Gujarat village

E-Mail this report to a friend

Vishal Soni in Vadodara (Gujarat)

Twenty-five peacocks were poisoned to death at Rayka village on Wednesday.

A farmer from the village informed Gujarat Society for Prevention of Cruelty Against Animals secretary Snehal Bhatt in Vadodara about the deaths.

Society volunteers found six bodies, as villagers claimed that the rest were buried by the killers. Forest department officials will dig out the remaining bodies on Thursday and send them for post-mortem.

The motive, according to Bhatt, is not yet known. She said that it was the first such incident in the area.

The killings, which have shocked nature lovers, probably occurred when the birds were fed poisoned wheat under a banyan tree in the area.

A forest department official has collected the poisoned wheat from the site, while wheat was also recovered from the stomachs of the dead birds.

Police have begun investigations into the killings.
