E-Mail this report to a friend

For the first time, 19 men affiliated to the Shiv Sena were sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment by Additional Metropolitan Magistrate M S Kagane in Karad, western Maharashtra, on Wednesday.

According to sources, the judge passed the order in a case of rioting and murder of a police constable by a group of Sena activists.

The incident occurred on the occasion of Holi when the men created tension in a part of Karad. The police team that went in search of them in an autorickshaw were intercepted and attacked with swords. Constable Ashok Tukaram Kadam was killed on the spot.

The court held the 19 accused guilty of the crime and sentenced them to life imprisonment under section 302 (murder) and other related sections of the Indian Penal Code.
