MP will lose 12 ministers to ChhattisgarhWith the new state of Chhattisgarh coming into being, the political future of nearly a dozen ministers of the Digvijay Singh Ministry in Madhya Pradesh hangs in balance. These ministers, 10 of them of cabinet rank, hail from Chhattisgarh and will have to start their political life afresh in the new state. Once the formalities related to the birth of a new state are completed, 90 legislators from Madhya Pradesh would become a part of the Chhattigarh assembly, leaving only 230 with the parent state. It's still not clear whether Chief Minister Digvijay Singh would induct fresh faces into his Cabinet to fill the vacancies or merely re-allocate portfolios. As far as Chhattisgarh is concerned, the structure of its ministry would depend largely on the new political equations that would emerge there. The 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly would have 48 Congress and 36 Bharatiya Janata Party legislators. Three of them would be of the Bahujan Samaj Party and the rest independents. Of the 13 MP ministers who hail from Chhattisgarh region, Ramchandra Singh Deo, who heads the water resources department, is the most senior. Other prominent Cabinet ministers who would eventually become a part of the Chhattisgarh assembly are: Ravindra Choube (general administration), Satyanarayan Sharma (commercial tax), Nand Kumar Patel (home), Dr Premsingh Sai (revenue), Krishna Kumar Gupta (mineral resources), Chanesh Ram Rathia (veterinary), Dhanesh Patila (schedules tribe welfare) and Mahendra Karma (jail). Bhupesh Baghel (transport), Shankar Sodhi (science and technology) and Dhanendra Sahu (water resources) are ministers of state. UNI |
