Four houses destroyed in fresh landslides in SikkimFour houses were destroyed in a fresh incidence of landslide in the worst-affected West Sikkim district of Sikkim. The state government has formally asked the Centre to send a team to inspect and assess the damage wrecked by the landslides, a senior official in the relief commissioner's office in the capital Gangtok said. "We are preparing a report assessing the loss in the landslide and will send it to the Centre," he added. Altogether 11 people have been killed, eight injured and a number of houses damaged in the week-long natural calamity in the district. District Magistrate S P Subba said over phone from Gyalshing, the district headquarters, that immovable property and cattle in three of the houses were swept away in heavy rains. However, heavy casualties were averted at Lower Chumbum, about 115 kilometres from Gangtok, as residents detected cracks. Sensing danger, they left their houses, he said. Yuksom had been totally cut-off due to the landslides, he said. Local panchayats are providing relief to the affected families, he said, adding the district administration officials have been asked by Chief Minister P K Chamling to work on a war-footing, extend help to the people and assess the loss to property in the area.
