Five people were killed and 13 others, including six Central Reserve Police Force men and a district superintendent of police, were injured when the police fired several rounds to disperse a rampaging mob of villagers who attacked policemen near Chaupran police station in Hazaribagh district Tuesday, officials said.

The state home commissioner, U N Panjiar, told PTI in Patna that angry villagers had blocked Grand Trunk Road near Berai in the Chaupran police station area Tuesday morning demanding immediate arrest of those involved in the alleged rape and murder of a woman of Bela village on August 25.

According to Director General of Police K A Jacob the demonstrators burnt two police vehicles and injured six CRPF men and a district superintendent of police when they clashed with the security men. They also snatched a self-loading rifle from a CRPF jawan during the attack.

As the crowd swelled, the demonstrators went on the rampage and started pelting stones and brickbats on the policemen, who resorted to a lathi-charge and teargas shelling, he said.

When the situation became uncontrollable, the police fired several rounds in which four persons were killed on the spot, while another succumbed to injuries on the way to hospital, Panjiar said.

The injured were rushed to the Ranchi Medical College Hospital and Sadar Hospital in Hazaribagh where the condition of some was stated to be critical.

Patrolling was intensified in Chauparan police station area after the firing as tensions were running high.

Senior police and civil officials, including the Hazaribagh police superintendent, Sobha Ahotkar, have rushed to the spot.
