Priyanka delivers a boy

Congress chief Sonia Gandhi's daughter Priyanka Vadra delivered her first child at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi on Tuesday at 1604 hours IST. The child, a boy, was born premature and, at 2.76 kg was underweight.

The delivery was by Caesarean operation. Both the baby and mother are fine, Dr B K Rao, joint secretary of the hospital board, said. Priyanka had been admitted to hospital on August 22. Her husband Robert and Sonia were present at the time of delivery, he said.

The baby was born 15 days before its due date. Dr (Mrs) S K Bhandari aided the delivery. Dr Bhandari is head of the Gynaecology Department at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital. She had aided the delivery of Priyanka and Rahul Gandhi.

Security around the hospital has been tight as a crowd had gathered outside awaiting news on the baby.
