E-Mail this report to a friend

Five Lashkar-e-Tayiba militants were arrested and a big haul of arms and ammunition was recovered from several insurgent hideouts in the Kashmir valley since Saturday night, a government spokesman said Sunday.

A soldier was wounded when militants ambushed a security patrol at Khiram near Bijbehara in Anantnag district of south Kashmir Saturday night.

Lashkar militant Mushtaq Ahmad (code Bilal Razak) was arrested alongwith two AK-56 rifles, three hand grenades, an AK silencer and some magazines and ammunition at Cewdara in Beerwah area of Badgam district in central Kashmir Sunday.

A cache of arms and explosives including a pistol, eight disposable rocket launchers, five flame throwers, three 107-mm rockets, 39 mortar shells, 114 grenades, nine improvised explosive devices and 21 gelatine sticks were seized by the army from a militant hideout in Nugam sector of north Kashmir Saturday evening.

Jammu police nabbed a militant alongwith a pistol and two swords from Gujjar Nagar area Sunday, the spokesman said.

Police recovered a Chinese pistol, a revolver, three grenades, three kgs of explosives and 12 bundles of copper wire during checking of vehicles at Karfali Mohalla and Parimpora in Srinagar Saturday night. A truck and an auto-rickshaw were seized and the drivers arrested.

Meanwhile, Bashir Ahmad Ganai, armed with a pistol and two grenades, forced his entry into the house of one Ghulam Nabi Kumbay at Katwara in Badgam district Saturday evening and demanded money from the house-owner.

However, the inmates overpowered the intruder and disarmed him. He was later handed over to police along with the weapons, the spokesman said.
