Onkar Singh in New Delhi

Delhi Police Commissioner Ajai Raj Sharma on Thursday announced that the crime branch had made a major breakthrough with the arrest of three top terrorists, including a woman member of the Khalistan Zindabad Force, on August 14, preventing a major mishap in the capital during the Independence Day celebrations.

"We have made a major breakthrough and eliminated a base of the terrorist outfit in Nepal from where they used to carry out their subversive activities. They had been using this base in Bir Ganj, Nepal, for the last two and a half years. During this period the self-styled chief of the Khalistan Zindabad Force, Ranjit Singh alias Neeta, also visited them and gave them money and explosives to carry out explosions," Sharma said.

Those arrested were Manprit Kaur alias Mann Behanji, Lakhbir Singh alias Baba and Surjeet Singh. "Surjeet Singh used to give them fake Indian currency. We recovered fake currency to the tune of Rs 3200 from Mann Behanji when she was arrested outside Gurdwara Rakabganj in the heart of New Delhi," the commissioner said.

"In the first week of August, ACP Ravi Shankar got information about the movement of this group from Nepal to Delhi and Punjab. The crime branch got into the act and early on the morning of August 14 Lakhbir Singh was apprehended in front of Gurdwara Rakabganj Sabib. Lakhbir was in possession of a high-grade explosive bomb weighing 2.8kg in a China clay pot. The bomb was fitted with one ABCD timer, one detonator and a 9 volt battery," another officer of the crime branch said.

During interrogation, the accused disclosed that they had been sent to Delhi to carry out explosions before the Independence Day function at crowded places along with one Amrit Pal Singh alias Romi and Manjeet Singh of Jammu.

"Manjit Singh is a Pakistani national who moves around with a beard and turban. He is the key suspect in the Paharganj bomb blast. After causing explosions Mann Behanji was to help the other accused back across the border. This group caused a large number of bomb blasts in Delhi, Punjab and Jammu. This included the Sirhind blast, the Samba blast, the Pooja Express blast and the Sealdah Express blast," the officer said.
