Bahrain air crash brings tragedy to Delhi home

E-Mail this report to a friend

Josy Joseph in New Delhi

Off the shores of Bahrain, amidst the wreckage of an Airbus, house number KA 4 of Old Kavi Nagar, on the outskirts of Delhi, has lost its brightest spark.

Inderpreet Kaur was an airhostess on board Gulf Air Flight GF072 that crashed in Bahrain on Wednesday. When the ill-fated flight plunged into the sea on Wednesday night, her parents were asleep. As dawn broke over Old Kavi Nagar came the devastating news of her death. Friends and relatives began pouring into her house. Her shocked parents have already left for Bahrain early on Thursday, to collect her body and accompany her on her last journey home.

Those who knew her recollect Inderpreet as a "chirpy and loving girl, full of life".

A happy-go-lucky girl, Inderpreet did her schooling from Delhi Public School, Ghaziabad, and went on to secure a degree in hotel management from the Manipal Institute of Hotel Management in Karnataka.

Her first job was with a travel agency. But soon her passion for flying led her to join Jet Airways. She was popular among her colleagues who remember her as a "very friendly person".

About two years back she got a break with Gulf Airways and was soon flying around the world.

Whenever she returned home, she would talk about cities, airports and people she met during her journeys, says her aunt. And she would always bring chocolates.

According to Dipander, her cousin, the family was planning her wedding. "It would have happened in the immediate future," he says.

No one knows exactly when Inder's parents will return. The relatives are still not sure if Inder's body has been found. They have been told that the search is still going on.
