Leptospirosis strikes in Assam

E-Mail this report to a friend

Leptospirosis, the deadly rat-carried disease, which claimed several lives in parts of Maharashtra and Delhi recently, has broken out in Guwahati.

According to Guwahati municipal commission authorities, two cases affecting children have been detected in a Delhi-based laboratory a week back.

A special ward has been opened at the Mohendra Mohan Choudhury hospital to deal with patients suffering from this disease.

The authorities said bleaching powder was being sprayed and doctors have been urged to keep the disease in mind while dealing with patients suffering from fever, headache and jaundice.

The problem for the civic authorities had been compounded since there was no kit readily available with the health authorities for examining blood samples to detect the disease.

Municipal commissioner Asish Kumar Bhuani appealed to people on television to keep their surroundings clean, as the disease is spread by rats.

He had also written to the state government to take precautionary measures and purchase kits for blood testing.
