Missing Caesium: Hospital ban lifted

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Atomic Energy Regulatory Board has lifted the ban imposed on the M N J Institute of Oncology, Hyderabad, on using Caesium kits for the treatment of cancer. The ban was imposed on July 26 in the light of lapses in radiation safety.

According to Parthasarthy, AERB secretary, the institution has agreed to implement the approved protocol in the release and receipt of sources and the maintenance of source inventory. The hospital has set up a radiation safety committee to monitor safety aspects in various departments.

The hospital has also assured AERB that the unused radium and other sources stored in the hospital would be sent for disposal. The hospital also undertook to comply with the provisions in the AERB safety code on brachytherapy, sources, equipment and installations.
