Musharraf refuses to retire as army chief

E-Mail this report to a friend

Pakistan's chief executive General Pervez Musharraf, who also serves as the chief of army staff, has said he will not retire as army chief in October 2001, when his tenure expires.

In an interview with the Japanese news network, Musharraf dispelled the notion that he may continue in office even after the conclusion of a deadline given by the supreme court for restoration of democracy in the country.

The order meant holding elections and transferring power to the peoples' representatives before October 12, 2002.

Musharraf also denied plans to join politics.
