Allahabad HC issues notice to Chandra Shekhar: PTI

The Allahabad high court has issued a notice to former prime minister Chandra Shekhar in a matter of alleged illegal land-grabbing at Rampur municipal locality in Ballia district of Uttar Pradesh about four years back.

The order was passed on Friday by a two-judge bench comprising Justices B K Roy and S K Jain on a public interest litigation.

The case was initiated against Chandra Shekhar on September 4, 1996 following a letter to the court that had alleged that the former premier, also a parliamentarian from Ballia, had grabbed a plot of community land in connivance with then district magistrate Gurdeep Singh.

The letter, deemed as a petition by the court, had further claimed that the land was not state property and inhabitants of the Rampur municipal locality had jointly paid charges for its development. It alleged that Chandra Shekhar grabbed the land using his political position.

Fixing September 26 as the next date of hearing in the case, the court directed issuance of notices to the former prime minister through the chief judicial magistrate, Ballia, and to Gurdeep Singh through the chief secretary, Uttar Pradesh.
