3 students drown in escape from police firing in Bihar

E-Mail this report to a friend

Imamganj in Bihar's Patna district was tense following the recovery of three students' bodies from a rivulet near Bedauli high school, where police had fired in the air to disperse students on Friday.

Official sources said in Patna that the police had fired in the air to disperse students who indulged in vandalism while blocking the Jehanabad-Arwal road to protest against the alleged assault of a student, Ravindra Kumar, by activists of the banned People's War group.

The firing led to a stampede, in which six students fell into a nearby rivulet.

The sources said three of them swam to safety.

The bodies of the three others were recovered from the rivulet on Saturday morning.

Kumar was beaten up by the activists, who held a Jan Adalat inside the school on August 10 to punish him on a complaint that he had ''misbehaved'' with a girl student, the sources said.

District magistrate, Patna, Amit Khare and police superintendent Sunil Kumar are camping at the site.
