E-Mail this report to a friend

At least 35 bodies have so far been fished out Saturday from the Banas river in Sahadol, Madhya Pradesh in which an over-crowded private bus carrying more than 70 people fell Friday while crossing an inundated bridge.

The bus was going to Sidhi from Beohari in Shahdol district of Rewa division.

Officials at the accident site said that 70 passengers were travelling in the ill-fated bus. Of these ten, who were seated on the bus top, were rescued Saturday morning.

The driver lost control of the bus while crossing the bridge, which was overflowing.

Rescue work was being jointly conducted by the district administration of both Sidhi and Shahdol. Cranes from the Bansagar project had been deployed. Rescue divers had been summoned from Rewa and Shahdol.

State officials said that army helicopters had been pressed into service and the help of expert divers had been sought to locate bodies of the victims.

Meanwhile Chief Minister Digvijay Singh expressed profound grief over the incident and directed the authorities to ensure speedy rescue and relief operations. The chief minister also announced relief of Rs 10,000 each to the affected family members.
