Pilgrims stranded due to landslides in Garhwal Himalayas

E-Mail this report to a friend

Hundreds of pilgrims, mostly from Gujarat and West Bengal, have been stranded in the Garhwal Himalayas due to landslides following heavy rain over three days.

The route to the Gangotri shrine has been blocked due to landslides at Nautala and Bhalla, eight km from Bhatwadi, while the route to Kedarnath has become intraversible due to roads caving in at Badasu and Sonprayag, leaving pilgrims stranded in Bhatwadi village in Uttarkashi district.

The Karnaprayag-Narayanbagad motor route has also been damaged by rain, creating problems for the August 22 Nanda Devi pilgrimage. More landslides could jeopardise the yatra.

Telecommunication services in the region have been affected following heavy rain. Essentials like food, kerosene and gas cylinders are not reaching people as roads have either been washed away or damaged.

Supplies have not reached people in the Pindar valley for days and the debris of landslides has not removed from roads connecting the valley to other places, causing miseries to local people and stranded pilgrims.
