'How dare these people steal the identity of Indians by dividing them on the basis of religion?'

Date: Fri, 04 Aug 2000, 16:53:57EST -0500
Subject: The Hizb interview

A very good interview. Well said, 'Your struggle for independence is not a struggle for Indian Muslims.'

Subject: 'Our struggle is for freedom'

Why the hell do these people differentiate between Indians as Indian Muslim, Indian Hindu and Indian Sikh? Religion is a means to attain salvation and not meant to aid territorial occupation and terrorist organisations. How dare these people steal the identity of Indians by dividing them on the basis of religion?

Subject: Pandits should defend themselves

The Pandits must be given arms to protect themselves against militant attacks. No matter what the Indian government, the Hizb or the J & K government would like to promise, this is a ground reality. They will be massacred if they are not able to defend themselves.

Subject: Third party intervention in Kashmir crisis

It would be a shame if India allows third party mediation in the Kashmir conflict with Pakistan. At this time, as suggested by your article, if India favours US intervention, it would only prove (and wrongly so) that all these years India did not agree to the mediation because the US did not agree with India's viewpoints. We should have learnt by now that whether or not the third person agrees with our viewpoint, it is not correct to involve that third person in a two-party dispute.

Subject: The birth of the Hizbul Mujahideen

The article is too longwinded. It could have highlighted the points where the organisation has shown extreme militancy or where its causes had been highlighted. A long organisational history was not required.

I am still not clear as to the Hizb's relationship with other militant groups and why this new found enthusiasm for peace on the part of the Hizb?

Subject: The birth of the Hizbul Mujahidden

They are killing innocent people on one hand and are talking of peace on the other. Either they believe that we can be taken for a ride every time or we are extremely stupid to listen to their approach to peace. I don't think we are going to live to see an end to this madness.

Subject: Aren't Muslims discriminated against?

I enjoyed this article. The author should have highlighted some other aspects too when he says, "The truth is that there are two standards in India -- one for the Hindus and one for the Muslims." Like for instance, how the Rajiv Gandhi government caved in to give precedence to the Muslim Personal Law.
