No time-frame for uniform civil code, LS told

E-Mail this report to a friend

The Union government Thursday said in the Lok Sabha that it cannot lay down any time-frame for a uniform civil code in view of its policy not to interfere in the personal laws of minorities unless initiative for this comes from them.

"It has been the consistent policy of the central government not to interfere in the personal laws of the minority communities unless the necessary initiative comes from the concerned communities themselves", Union Law Minister Arun Jaitley said in a written reply.

Two affidavits were filed in Supreme Court explaining the steps taken by government in this regard after the court asked it to give a fresh look at Article 44 of the Constitution and "endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India", he informed.
