9 killed in bomb blast on Sabarmati Express

E-Mail this report to a friend

Nine persons were killed and 36 injured when a bomb ripped through the last compartment of the Muzaffarpur-Ahmedabad Sabarmati Express as it passed by Rauzabad, about 30km from Faizabad in Uttar Pradesh.

The blast occurred at about 2215 IST on Independence Day eve.

Railway spokesman Akshay Kumar said there were only about 70 persons in the unreserved compartment at the time.

"We believe the bomb was hidden in a piece of luggage. Thankfully, the compartment was not too crowded," he said.

He said no group had claimed responsibility for the bombing.

The train left the scene to continue its journey at 0140 IST, the spokesman added.

Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and grief at the explosion. "This is an act of cowardice by desperate anti-national elements," she said. "I convey my deep and sincere condolences to the families of the dead and speedy recovery to the injured."
